AERE Fellows. The following individuals have been named 2020 Fellows of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (AERE): William “Bill” D. Schulze (Cornell University) and Laura O. Taylor (Georgia State University). This program recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of environmental and resource economics. The deadline for submitting nominations for the 2021 award is December 1, 2020. Membership in AERE is not a prerequisite for receiving the award. EAERE Fellows. The European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE) Fellows Programme recognizes outstanding contributions in the field of environmental and resource economics. EAERE Fellows have contributed to the advancement of the profession through outstanding publications, important roles in the policy world, and/or important roles in EAERE’s governance and/or activities. The 2020 EAERE Fellows are: Anna Alberini (University of Maryland), Geir Asheim (University of Oslo), and Carlo Carraro (University Ca’ Foscari of Venice).

AERE Publication of Enduring Quality Award. The 2020 Publication of Enduring Quality Award was presented to Thomas H. Tietenberg for Emissions Trading: An Exercise in Reforming Pollution Policy, Washington, DC: Resources for the Future, 1985; and Kenneth Y. Chay and Michael Greenstone for “The Impact of Air Pollution on Infant Mortality: Evidence from Geographic Variation in Pollution Shocks Induced by a Recession,” Quarterly Journal of Economics, Vol. 118, No. 3 (August 2003), pp. 1121–1167. This award is presented for publications based on their seminal nature and enduring value. The deadline for submitting nominations for the 2021 award is December 1, 2020. Award for Outstanding JAERE Paper. The 2019 Ralph C. d’Arge and Allen V. Kneese Award for Outstanding Publication in the Journal of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (JAERE) was presented to Yukiko Hashida and David J. Lewis for “The Intersection between Climate Adaptation, Mitigation, and Natural Resources: An Empirical Analysis of Forest Management,” Vol. 6, Issue 5 (2019), pp. 893–926. This award recognizes an exemplary research paper published in JAERE during the calendar year.

Award for Outstanding Publication in Environmental and Resource Economics. The winners of the 2020 award for Outstanding Publication in Environmental and Resource Economics (ERE) are Luis Moisés Peña Lévano (University of Florida), Farzad Taheripour (Purdue University), and Wallace E. Tyner (Purdue University) for “Climate Change Interactions with Agriculture, Forestry Sequestration, and Food Security”—doi.org/10.1007/s10640-019-00339-6. This award recognizes exemplary research published in ERE during 2019. We are terribly sorry to acknowledge the loss of Wallace E. Tyner on August 17, 2019.

European Practitioner Achievement Award in Applying Environmental Economics. Artur Runge-Metzger (European Commission) is the winner of the 2020 European Practitioner Achievement Award in Applying Environmental Economics. The award recognizes practitioners in the policy or business arena who have made signal contributions in the application of economic ideas.

European Achievement Award for Researchers in Environmental Economics under the Age of Forty. Antoine Dechezleprêtre (Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, London School of Economics and Political Science; currently on leave at OECD) is the winner of the 2020 European Achievement Award for Researchers in Environmental Economics under the Age of Forty. The award recognizes the environmental economist under the age of forty who is judged to have made the most significant contribution to environmental economic thought and knowledge.

EAERE Awards for European Research Council (ERC) Grant laureates in the field of environmental and resource economics. These awards recognize the scientific excellence of individual ERC grantees. The winners of the 2020 awards are Emanuele Campiglio (Vienna University of Economics and Business), Elena Verdolini (University of Brescia, European Institute on Economics and the Environment—EIEE, and Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change Foundation—CMCC), and Ulrich Wagner (University of Mannheim).

EAERE Award for Best European Doctoral Dissertation in Environmental and Resource Economics. The winners of the 2020 EAERE Best European Doctoral Dissertation in Environmental and Resource Economics Award are Maurizio Malpede (University of Milano-Bicocca), Paul Neetzow (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin), and Lutz Sager (The London School of Economics and Political Science). This award encourages and recognizes outstanding and innovative academic achievement in the field of environmental and resource economics.

AERE Award for an Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation.The Wallace E. Oates Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award, established in honor of Wally Oates (1937–2015), is awarded for an outstanding doctoral dissertation in environmental or resource economics. The winner receives a $1,500 cash award along with a $500 travel grant to attend a recognition ceremony at the AERE Luncheon at the Allied Social Science Associations (ASSA) annual meeting. In addition, the dissertation abstract is published in JAERE. The deadline for nominations for this award is August 15. The AERE Board invites members of the community to contribute to the Oates Endowment Fund. All donations are tax exempt. AERE Elections. This year, AERE members will vote for two new members of the Board of Directors, who will serve for three years beginning in January 2021. The nominations are being handled by a committee chaired by AERE Vice President John C. Whitehead (Appalachian State University). Elections will be held in November 2020.

AERE Membership 2020. AERE membership rates remain lower than those for other similar organizations, with an option for discounted three-year memberships for individuals, universities, and institutions, as well as reduced rates to residents, institutions, and universities in low, lower-middle, and upper-middle income economies as defined by the World Bank. (AERE members are invited to consider making a donation to support these memberships.) EAERE members may join AERE at a discount. Institutional and University memberships include a complimentary annual AERE membership for a designated individual, which comes with electronic subscriptions to both REEP and JAERE. Agricultural & Applied Economics Association (AAEA) and AERE. AERE cosponsors two invited speaker sessions at the AAEA annual meeting on current issues of mutual interest to both organizations. To learn more about submitting your work for presentation at the AAEA, please visit their portal for individual paper submissions and organized symposia. Submissions are due in January each year. The 2020 meeting will take place July 26–28 at the Kansas City Marriott Downtown, Kansas City, MO. Southern Economic Association. The 2020 annual meeting of the Southern Economic Association will be held November 21–23, 2020, at the New Orleans Marriott in New Orleans, LA. Allied Social Science Associations (ASSA) 2021 Annual Meeting. AERE is sponsoring sessions at the 2021 winter meeting of the ASSA, to be held January 3–5, 2021, at the Hyatt Regency Chicago in Chicago, IL. The call for papers is now closed. AERE papers will be listed on the AERE web page.

Eastern Economic Association. AERE sessions will be held at the 2021 Eastern Economic Association annual conference (date and location to be announced). AERE sessions will be organized by Jimena Gonzalez (Manhattan College). Please note that all presenters must be 2021 AERE members. See the AERE web page for more information.

Midwest Economics Association. AERE sessions will be held at the meeting of the Midwest Economics Association at the Westin Cleveland Downtown in Cleveland, OH, March 26–28, 2021. The sessions are being organized by Lea-Rachel Kosnik (University of Missouri, St. Louis). The deadline for submissions is September 1, 2020. See the AERE web page for details. EAERE-ETH 2021 Winter School. The EAERE-ETH European Winter School in Environmental and Resource Economics is jointly organized by EAERE and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich). The 2021 School will take place (date to be announced) in Monte Verità, Ascona (Switzerland) and will be coordinated by Christa Brunnschweiler (University of East Anglia). The topic will be “Natural resources and development in resource-rich countries.” The call for applications is expected to be launched in June 2020.

AERE 2021 Summer Conference. AERE announces that its next summer conference and preconference workshop will be held June 2–4, 2021, at the Hyatt Regency Miami in Miami, FL. David L. Kelly (University of Miami) and Christopher Parmeter (University of Miami) are the cochairs of the Organizing Committee. Information will be posted on the AERE web page this fall.

26th EAERE Annual Conference. EAERE will hold its 26th Annual Conference in Berlin, Germany, June 23–26, 2021. The call for papers will open in November 2020.

EAERE Policy Outreach Committee. In 2018, EAERE established a Policy Outreach Committee, with the objective of increasing EAERE’s impact in the EU policy arena. The committee’s activities include organizing conferences and other events aimed at increasing dialogue between academia and the policy world. Economists’ Statement on Carbon Pricing. The Policy Outreach Committee of EAERE prepared the Economists’ Statement on Carbon Pricing to encourage the emergence of a global carbon price and draw the attention of policymakers to its importance as a key (although not the only) instrument for achieving future decarbonization targets. Officially presented in June 2019, the Statement has been signed by more than 1,730 economists from around the world. To view and sign the statement, go to: www.eaere.org/statement/.

EAERE Magazine. The quarterly EAERE Magazine is an outlet for new research, projects, and other professional news, featuring articles that can contribute to policy discussions and developments in the environmental and natural resource economics field. ResEcon. AERE thanks Martino Pelli (Université de Sherbrooke) for his continued management of the ResEcon listserv. ResEcon has more than 1,000 members from around the world who post and receive information relevant to their work.

EAERE Membership. Individuals and public and private institutions are invited to support EAERE by becoming members. Students and universities can apply for membership at a reduced rate.
